Been listening to an old Kate and Anna McGarrigle record called 'Heartbeats Accelerating.' So many stunning songs. I am always immobilized by the sadness and beauty of 'I Eat Dinner' when Kate McGarrigle talks about the loneliness of her life post breakup from Loudon Wainwright. She mentions eating dinner with her 'daughter, who is thirteen.' She is referring to Martha Wainwright, the singer and songwriter.
Martha Wainwright deals with that time in her life in her song 'Bloody Motherf*cking A**hole' from her first record. The song is quite powerful. She talks about her father leaving home and the damage it did. God, I love her. What a singer. What a song.
It's quite the domestic portrait, the mother and the daughter sharing their point of view.

Guardian UK article about Martha WainwrightOf course, Rufus Wainwright is Kate and Loudon's son and Martha's sister. Songwriting is in the blood in this family.
